TO:                                 ASSBT Members
FROM:                           Doug Emek, Chairman - Savitsky Award Committee
DATE:
August 12, 2010
SUBJECT:                      Savitsky Award

The Savitsky Memorial Award is among the most prestigious awards in the sugar industry.  This award memorializes the contributions of Viacheslav and Helen Savitsky for their discovery and development of the monogerm gene in sugarbeets.  This discovery has provided for the near-elimination of field labor in the production of sugarbeets throughout most of the agricultural world.  It has been the main factor in the industry in many producing areas.

The recipient of the Savitsky Memorial Award can be from any nation, a member or non-member of the ASSBT, who has had an impact on the national and international beet sugar community.  The ASSBT By-laws state that the chairperson of the Savitsky Awards Committee must solicit candidates’ names from the ASSBT membership.  This is that request for nominations.

The procedure for nominating a candidate is as follows:  The candidate's name must be in the hands of the Savitsky Award Committee by November 1, 2010.  The Committee may select recipient and submit such name to the President of ASSBT by December 1, 2010.  Such name will be submitted to the ASSBT Board of Directors for their unanimous approval.  Upon selection of a recipient, the Board of Directors shall determine an appropriate monetary award.  The Savitsky Award is not necessarily awarded each biennium.

Please submit your nomination with complete background information to the office of the Executive Vice President, of the ASSBT, who will forward it to the Committee.  Thank you.
